On October 17th, the Department of Education announced it will provide $70 million in grants to support school-based mental health services. This funding can go towards key mental health infrastructure such as hiring additional counselors, expanding professional development opportunities, providing stipends to interns working in high-need schools, and more.
By investing this funding, as well as $571 million in School-Based Mental Health Services and Mental Health Service Professionals Demonstration, the Administration hopes to help address the youth mental health crisis. As Secretary of Education Cardona noted, “[w]e know that students are more likely to access mental health support if it's offered in schools.”
ACA is heartened to see this holistic investment in counselors and schools and will continue monitoring grants opportunities for counselors. If you have any questions or would like to learn more, please email us at advocacy@counseling.org.
