Should We Have a Three Digit Suicide Prevention Hotline? Have Your Say.

Dec 6, 2018

The National Hotline Improvement Act was signed into law August 2018.  The law requires the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), the United States Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to examine the effectiveness of the current National Suicide Prevention Lifeline and the feasibility of changing it to a three digit N11 number.

The law also requires the VA to report to the FCC how well the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline and the Veterans Crisis Line are working to address the needs of veterans.

The public has the opportunity to comment on the proposed change. To submit a public comment, visit the FCC’s Express Comment platform, fill out and submit the form. You can search the proceeding by typing “National Hotline” into the first field, or search for it by reference number 18-336.

The deadline for public comment is December 10.
