Services provided by psychiatrists, psychologists, clinical social workers, and psychiatric nurses are currently covered by Medicare. Services provided by mental health counselors and marriage and family therapists are not—even though they cover approximately 40 percent of all mental health services.
U.S. Rep. John Katko (R-NY) recently introduced legislation, the Mental Health Improvement Act, to include licensed mental health counselors and marriage and family therapists as eligible service providers under Medicare. This change would add more than 165,000 mental health providers to the network, providing greatly improved access to care for America's senior citizens.
