He provided tips for coping with grief, strategies for combating loneliness, and examples of how to adopt a solution-focused approach to stressful family gatherings. He also encouraged people to seek help from a professional counselor if the blues start to interfere with daily life or if they think they are depressed.
“Go volunteer at a soup kitchen, at a hospital, at an animal shelter…it’s very difficult to feel blue if you’re helping others,” said Dr. Kaplan.
