During a special session of the ACA Governing Council on December 14, the board took the bold step of approving a nine-point plan addressing issues of racism and discrimination. To support the endeavor, the Governing Council appropriated a budget of more than $219,000 for these efforts.
"The unanimous vote of our board sent a powerful message that we will not support racism in any form," said ACA President Dr. Sue Pressman, "Whether racism is experienced in our communities or the counseling profession, we must do what we can to eradicate such oppression."
Included in the comprehensive plan are projects that will look at systemic racism, create resources for counselors who work with law enforcement, develop materials for school counselors, and how to provide more opportunities for counselors of color in the areas of scholarly publication, attendance at professional events, and career opportunities.
"I am proud of the action taken by the ACA Governing Council and I look forward to our continued efforts to ensure that our members have the resources they need in dealing with incidents of racism in society."
