Substance abuse is a pattern of compulsive alcohol or drug consumption that causes problems for the consumer in different areas of life, such as work, school, or relationships. Addiction is a state of psychological or physical dependence on the use of drugs or alcohol. It is a chronic condition that affects the brain and makes people crave and use substances despite harmful consequences.
